I'd pull the 283, store it, and put a real engine in it. 283 is a lame duck by today's standards. People remember the 283 as a great engine, but forget what it was great compared to, 90hp straight sixes and flathead Fords. Compared to that, yeah, it was awesome. Also, traffic moved slower, try kicking down a 283 weezer to merge with modern 70 mph traffic. I would bet it has at least one lobe down on the cam anyway, flat tappet Chevy cams only came two ways, flat lobe, or almost flat lobe. Lots of rusted out 96-98 GM trucks that can donate a 5.7 Vortec with a steel roller cam. Swap on your accessories, an Edelbrock Vortec carb intake, and have way more power.
