are you referring to a massey 26?? or just any old combine? I know straight cutting you will travel a little faster than picking up a swath. I do know a 26 is way older than an 82 and I sure cant see an 82 combining at 3 mph. my uncle had one and I hauled grain for him with a 1948 dodge 1 1/2 ton. it did not even have a hoist. just a hole in the front corner with a shoot for the grain to run into auger . I also know you could walk faster than that combine would travel combining in low gear, plus it had a variable drive too. that was in early 70's . plus the crop was cut with a versatile 103 15' header. I did the swathing. dad had the massey super 92 and it was quite noticeable faster. but yes in light crop the old 26 might do 2 mph. and heading home empty probably 3 mph. it was even a chain drive to the wheels if I remember right. small 6 cyl. chrysler engine. small hopper maybe 40 bu.
