I think your comment "fit the song perfectly" is the real key (pun not intended) that a pedal steel player needs to find. It is different for every song and every singer. Ralph Mooney did a wonderful job of matching his licks to the singer - especially to Waylon Jennings. Of course Ralph was great who ever he played behind.

I took several seminars and mail order lessons from Jeff Newman and he strongly emphasized to "stay out of the way of the singer - you are not the star - it isn't a steel guitar solo"!
