First question: Why speed differential between 540 and 1000 rpm pto? Power delivered is a function of both the torque and the rotational speed of the shaft. This is the main reason why engine rpm's of modern tractors are greater than those of the 40's and 50's. (The increased speed awaited better manufacturing and balancing techniques.) Second question: Spline size. The surface area presented at the active surfaces of the driving and driven shafts was increased on the 1000 rpm shafts by increasing the number of splines. Thus the pressure (and wear and tear) between the surfaces (for a given amount of torque) was decreased.
