Matt;

The Oliver 2655 was a Minneapolis-Moline A4T-1600 tractor manufactured in MM's Hopkins, MN plant in 1971; this was the only year this tractor was sold
as a 2655 Oliver. Its sale as a MM A4T-1600 or White Plainsman A4T-1600 began in 1970 I believe and continued for some years later, perhaps 1973. I will see if I have any written documentation to back this up as I am writing from memory at the moment. The Oliver 2655 (and its MM and White counterpart) used MM's 585 cu. in. diesel or LP gas engine, popularly called a "Whisper Diesel" for its inherent quiet detonation of the fuel due to the unique M.A.N. combustion chamber design. This engine produced 147 pto hp in the tractor. At a later date, a turbocharger was installed to raise the pto hp slightly to 151, I believe. The 2655 was an attempt to sell more tractors through White's entire dealership network. Rather than have Oliver design its own 4WD tractor, they decided to simply try to have their Oliver dealers distribute a 4WD tractor painted in the Oliver scheme. Not many of these were sold. I believe fewer than 400 2655s were made and sold in the Oliver paint scheme.
WFE introduced a 4WD model to replace these tractors in 1974, the White 4-150. The 4-180 followed in 1975 so two sizes were offered. If I find out any of these facts are in error, I shall write to let you know. Need to know more? Go to the Oliver discussion group in the Cafe.

Today's Featured Article - A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner. ...
