My first cousin bought a IH 3588 new in 1980. That tractor helped bankrupt him. The next year we had a really short planting window. It was wet enough that there was about two weeks of planting the first of May. Then it was June planting. That IH 3588 was broke down and in the shop all of the time. It shucked the transmission with less than 100 hours on it. He really did not work it as his equipment was used with the IH 1466 he traded in on the IH 3588. The late planting and an early frost started his downward plunge. He made it until 1984 but never recovered from the losses of 1981. To this day he says that if he had kept his IH 1466 he would have made it through the 1980s. I think he is right about that too.
The tractor handled pretty well once you got used to the way it pivoted. Strange to turn the steering wheel and see the hood disappear. LOL
A neighbor bought a IH 6588 new and he has had great luck with it. He loved it for chopping corn silage. He still has it. It is a backup tractor now but I think it has over 10,000 hours on it with not too many repairs. I think they had some of the issues worked out and he treated it like a big 2wd tractor. The trouble was with guys that treated the 2+2s like full 4wd tractors. They where not designed for that type of work. The MFWD tractors made the 2+2 redundant.
