Sounds like it was running like a model airplane engine! These small engines are 2 stroke, and glow ignition. Instead of a spark plug, they use a glow plug, which is a small metal coil that glows red hot. Heated with a battery to start. Once the engine is running, the battery is disconnected. Sometimes also called a glow/diesel cycle. If you don't spin them fast enough in one direction, they'll easily start in the other. If it wasn't a hot spot or piece of carbon lighting the fire, perhaps your plugs were red hot?
