Trying to design something to raise and lower planter

I am trying to design a unit to raise and lower a One row Iron AGE planter. My wife riding on the planter is having a struggle with the lever. I would like it power with a 12 volt battery. Thinking about using a starter motor fastened to a lead screw to operate it. How fast do most starters turn and can they be reversed with a drum switch. I need about 12 inches of linear movement being able to stop it for different depths. Want it to go up and down fairly fast. Also Which starter would be the easiest and cheapest to obtain. I seen one made using a hydralic cylinder, but it was so strong and quick the whole lever assembly got bent up beyond repair.. Any ideas Guys. Thanks.
