High mileage oil was already mentioned. If you have some oil consumption, or minor seal leaks, those are two of several things HM oils help with . They help fight wear and sludge more too.
Most standard oils are sufficient but they are kind of like a "one size fits all" oil type for a broad selection of engines, new or old. HM oils are taking the extra steps to help specific concerns you might have with higher mileage engines. Do you need it? no. Does it help? yes. Will it hurt anything? no.
