First I'd have them sandblasted. For a little extra, if you don't want them pitted a little more from the blasting, take them to an auto restorer or someone who does bead (glass) blasting. It cleans all the rust and doesn't attack the metal as bad. Follow that with multiple LIGHT coats, stress light! of a good quality sandable primer. More coats is better than more paint in one coat. The idea is to fill in the pits with the primer. Then a good enamel paint should finish the job. Again if your spraying, more coats is better than more paint in one coat. Follow procedures between coats like temp and humidity if possible. Pass the Wal Mart when you go paint shopping too. Check an auto supply that offers body shop supplies. It won't cost you that much more but the end result will be far better. Good luck
