I left Dallas at 3:30, Wednesday, May 31, 2017 and never looked back. People kept telling me to give myself time to 'adjust' to retirement. Yeah, right. By time I got out my truck and to the house, I had 'adjusted'. Have loved every minute.
Last year, hay cutting was a nightmare. Multiple equipment breakdowns, rain when forecast said 0% chance which damaged or ruined the cutting, etc, etc, etc. We decided we didn't need the headache any more. Sold the balers, cutters and rakes this spring. Haven't regretted it one bit. Contacted our neighbor who has cattle and a former customer and they took over cutting the hay fields. I got enough for my horses, they took their share for cutting and paid a nominal price for anything over that. EASY!
Now we just do maintenance around the place, but there's always plenty of that. We still spray for weeds and keep our fields in top condition.
I am doing more horseback riding. Lost my horse of 17 yrs to colic in March. Bought a new one in April. He's young and not very educated, but a nice guy. Started taking him out on trails in this area and found out about a trail riding club which I have joined. There is a club ride once a month. I have made friends with some of the members and we get together to ride between the club rides.
Since James played football when he was in high school and I always enjoyed watching, it was a natural progression to start going to his former high school's games. I must brag on him a bit. James was the second fastest guy in the state when he was in high school. He played free safety on defense and no one scored when he was on the field. Their team won the state championship in 1968.
Last year on a whim, we went to a Kilgore College game since they play on Saturdays. Had a ball and bought season tickets for this year. Game days are dinner generally at Jalapeno Tree (excellent Mexican food) then a ball game.
In the spring, I spend time in the flower beds and I mow the yard since I've always enjoyed mowing. James does the heavy stuff like maintenance mowing around the place, cutting low hanging limbs, etc.
James tried to sell a couple of our tractors since we're not using them anymore, but no takers. Apparently, that market has dried up. Its ok, we didn't have to sell them, just thought we'd pass them on to someone who would use them.
Because our tv reception is very bad here, I have started buying dvd's off ebay and in the evenings we like to watch a movie.

Today's Featured Article - A Lifetime of Farm Machinery - by Joe Michaels. I am a mechanical engineer by profession, specializing in powerplant work. I worked as a machinist and engine erector, with time spent overseas. I have always had a love for machinery, and an appreciation for farming and farm machinery. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
