Gear pumps are fixed displacement so the output flow is proportional only to rotational speed. This style of pump is used for open-center systems where unneeded flow simply goes back to the reservoir. Piston pumps are generally variable displacement where the flow can be varied to provide only what is required at any given time. This closed-center system uses a pressure compensator, possibly paired with a load-sense valve, to control the displacement. The two styles of systems use different types of valves and circuitry so whatever your tractor has now is what you need to stay with. Both gear and piston pumps are available in good, long-life versions from brand-name manufacturers. With gear pumps cast iron typically provides better life and performance compared to aluminum but good aluminum pumps are available too.
