You are thinking about the way things were when we were that age.( I am in my late 50’s). There were no cuckoo birds shooting up schools back then. Instead we had fire and air raid drills. The school is trying to prepare for a situation where no one there is prepared to fight back effectively so they do lockdown and things like that. You wouldn’t want that kid to run towards an active shooter and try to take him out with a math book. It is sad that things have come to this but they have. I remember having a gun at school in my truck during hunting season and it never entered my mind to use it on any thing but deer. I am sure military training will make a good fighter out of those who enlist just like firefighters training replaces what we did for a fire drill in school.
