George, it's simple math. A ten inch diameter circle has over twice the area as 5.5 inch square. So all things being equal, a ten inch concrete plug it will support twice the weight as a 6x6 post before sinking. Will it matter in your soil? I dunno, but it's cheap insurance. It also makes it easy to bring all your holes to exactly the same elevation, using a transit or laser level.
