I'm not sure whether you are replying to my post or the original one with the question. What I said was that if you decided to go with a 12 volt system (using a 12 volt battery and a 12 volt generator), then you would have 12 volts going to a 12 volt coil which would make sense. Then, you'd have 12 volts heading from the other side of the coil to the distributor (which you don't want, you only want 6 volts going to the distributor points). So the step-down resistor from 12V to 6 V would be located on the line between the 12 V coil and the distributor terminal. It's the high voltage at the distributor points you want to avoid. I believe that 12V cars from the factory (say in the 1960's) had this system. As for your mention of a 12 volt coil not working on 6 Volts, actually it does work. Probably not as well as if it were fed by 12 volts, but it does work. My son's Massey 333 is 12 volts and he mistakenly wired a resistor in BEFORE the 12 Volt coil and his tractor starts and runs fine with 6V into the 12V coil.

Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
