We put a blanket over the septic tank/ lift station, and cover the sidewalk with styrofoam around the north side of the house, to prevent the frost from getting under the foundation, that's done already. In new construction, sidewalks next to a building should have foam under them. Then just before we leave we blow out the water lines and heater, and put rv anti-freeze in the traps. We leave the thermostat for the NG furnace set at 55, and there is some electric heat set at 45 for backup. It's easy to blow out the water system so it's not worth the risk of freezing. The well is a artesian/flowing well, so there is a pipe going to the lake that runs 5 gpm when we are gone.
We have been renting the same condo in AZ for 7 years, so we drive a small efficient car down and just move in our clothes and groceries, it's like a second home. If we were going to stay much longer it might be feasible to buy something, but we're only gone 3 months. My parents owned a mobile home in a park and spent 5-6 months for 20 winters.
We like the location, it's flat around the condo for bicycle riding, but there are lot's of mountains 5 miles away. There is lot's of good shopping and restaurants within 10 miles.
