Ah, that explains it. As I understand the physics of it, the lifting effect is directly proportional to the load applied above the traction lugs in the earth. The lower the drawbar, the more inline with the tractive force, the less oveturn(backward)moment. The short wheelbase allowed a reasonable turning radius while not needing a sophisticated steering linkage capable of sharp angling.
