Sometimes I do things and wonder exactly what the reasoning is. I’ve always done it that way, that’s why! Two weeks ago I weaned calves and had several with pinkeye. We still had some flies then.
Like I’ve always done, when I was graining them later that day I poured a fistful of table salt in my hand and threw it in each offending eye. Two days later everyone was cleared up.
Is there actually any science to that or is it like mom and her axle grease remedy for any wound? It might have helped. It might not have helped. But we did it and no one died.
I’d sure hate to have been those calves though. I wince every time I do it but every one clears up quick. Too much salinity for the bacteria? All the watering washes out the bacteria? I’ve been lucky for 40 some years?
