I toured E. Germany in the 90's lots of building in smaller towns looked rough, my German friend said they had not been painted since before the war. We went to lunch in a small restaurant, I have to say the kitchen was as modern as anything could be. When the former East German server found out I was an American, she cut up my food, hovered around keeping water and beer glasses full. My friend asked if I wanted another wife, and to be careful. I also have an East German flag that flew on the wall. Great trip, my friend was conscripted into the German Army at 16, worked for Robert Bosch in USA. He had lots of experiences to tell.
