Put blower on high and select full hot, then feel the hoses after 5-10 minutes. If one is hot and other cold, the heater core is prob restricted. accessing or replacing the heater core is not a big deal on these trucks.
The temp control is cable operated, so move the temp knob quickly both ways and you should hear a nice "thump" noise at full cold and full hot. If you don't hear a thump, then something is blocking the door. Door obstructions were common in these years, anything you set up on the dash that can fall through the def vents, will eventually make it down to the temp blend door and keep it from shutting hot/cold.
