Funny you mension just getting it close by setting reference cylinder (#1) to tdc and eyeballing the valves. I was talking to a Cat mechanic about this and that was his sugggesion too. Glad to hear it can work.
I do understad when doing it this way a bit of time will be spent just rolling the engine over by hand to be as sure as possible i have it correct.
To bad about the cam specs not being available, they are for cars (older V8's)
