One time years ago my Case 311 wouldn't start. I messed with it all day with no luck. Finally it started getting dark, and a friend dropped by. I asked him to hit the key while I was standing on the other side of the tractor from where I always climb on. As he did, I watched a giant blue spark jump from the top of the coil to the small terminal on the side. It's been long enough now that I don't remember if I replaced the coil or just put another coil wire on it, but I've never had another problem with it.
