35 years or so I went to bell tone and flunked there hearing test. got me a pair of them. I think they were 1200 bucks but companies ins paid for them. about 15 years ago I decided to go to a specialist for my ears. after the test the doctor said it was due to a medical problem my hearing was bad. He put tubes in my ears and boy that opened up a world of noise. no more aids until 5 years ago I got some at the va. although those hearing aid places I think do a good job of providing aids I don't think they are specialist in the ears and I think there priority first is selling aids.. everyone does what they want to but times has changed. lot more doctors in specialists field now. I will always go to a specialists first to verify my problem. this has been my experience.
