(quoted from post at 22:14:19 12/03/19) A sports facility like a stadium pays back far more than sales taxes, look at the income taxes from just the players salaries alone. And businesses are drawn to places with professional sports teams. Not all make money of course it has to be managed right but overall they are a big plus for the areas they are located.
Lot of those players pay taxes in other states because they never become legal residents of MN so that is a farce.
Business are drawn to what? When they built the dome in the cities they said it would revitalize the area and draw in businesses to that area. Not true. Didn't work. So that's all smoke and mirrors too.
As far as roads in rural areas? We are a tourism area. So that argument for MN doesn't wash either. Besides, everyone benefits from roads even in remote rural areas. City folk's food travels to market down those roads. And more than GMO crops too. Meat on the hoof. Poultry and dairy products too. MN has been hemorrhaging businesses too because of state corporate taxes. So the businesses that the stadium attracts? Restaurant chains and hotels? Most of em are HQ'ed outside of MN and none of then were even near the dome.
Kinda like the Super Bowl committee claims that the SB brought 340 million to the state. They base this on figuring people spent 608 dollars a day X the number of people who attended the game X 6 day stay. 1:The weather was bad. Many ticket holders arrived Friday night and departed Monday because of the weather. So total time here was about 3 days. 2: MN exempted NFL merchandise from sales taxes for the game. Most of the merch was jerseys which are clothing that isn't taxed in MN anyway. 3: The real kicker. Most of the money spent here? Was spent in meals and hotels. They figure that 88 cents on the dollar left the state. So cut that 340 million in half. Then reduce it by 88%. Then of the 20 million left reduce that down again as a tax base as most of the 608 dollars a day average? Is spent on NFL trinkets that were not taxed. Now they did pay Minneapolis back the 7.4 million the SB cost the city. What about the suburbs? What about St Paul?
Before I became informed on just how much NFL and MLB teams cost tax payers I'd watch a half dozen games a year, some of the playoffs and the Super Bowl for football. I at least paid attention to how teams were doing in MLB. I cut that down to just the Super Bowl after the new Vikings stadium. MLB, nothing. Sense the football field became the venue for political statements I stopped even paying attention to team standings. Zero! Not even the Super Bowl.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
