Larry, Thanks for the post and a reminder of how I spent a portion of my mis-spent youth. The potato farmers back in the 50s and 60s in Northeastern Ohio used equipment just like what you posted. Then, they would hire locals to crawl from one of the field to the other digging through the loose soil and picking out the potatoes. We'd put the potatoes into gunny sacks or into bushel baskets for pick-up by others later in the day.
We were paid 6 cents per bushel in "good" areas or 10 cents per bushel in "poor" areas. As a kid, I was thrilled to visit the tally-man at the end of the day to be paid for the previous day's work.
