Warpage is the enemy, take your time with the welding. Use very short trigger time so not to burn holes. Another trick is to support the back side with a scrap of nonferrous metal as a heat sink and to support the puddle while it cools.
Once a solid surface is established, the fine finish is done with Bondo. Be careful not to grind the surrounding metal too thin. Flap wheels work better than hard discs.
