You don't mention if you are checking bags or only thinking of carry-on. If strictly carry-on and only clothing, then you can go pretty cheap and soft-side (it's generally lighter weight and more 'squishable'). The flight itinerary that comes with your ticket will list bag dimensions and weight allowances.
If you need more capacity (checking), there are basically two strategies: Buy cheap and be relieved if it lasts more than one major trip or try to spend up and get "the good stuff" that will last a long time. The cheap stuff will have short handles, tiny wheels with crappy bearings, and weak zippers. Fine for traveling by car but not much else.
The high-priced stuff is probably more than you need and it will be more attractive to thieves. I was co-leader of a group tour some years ago. We were headed to the Milan (Italy) airport. All bags accounted for but one 'mysteriously' disappeared. You guessed it- the most pricey bag in the group. When we made it clear that we were quite prepared to wait for police to come and investigate, it was 'magically' found.
I'm no fan of the four little casters. They're fine inside the airport, but my travels include cobbled streets, uneven sidewalks, and curbs that render them useless. I much prefer two big wheels, but they seem to be harder and harder to find.
Baggage handling can destroy any suitcase. Suitcases can also become lost or stolen, though it's never happened to me. I've never tried hard-side bags but I think that, unless you check bags once a month, they're not really worth any extra cost. For the same capacity, a soft-side bag will store in a smaller space and it can be overstuffed if needed (isn't it always?).
I highly recommend investing in a luggage scale. It will pay for itself the first time you avoid extra fees at check-in. Use it at home and take it with you. Our last major overseas trip, we came back with three bags. Empty, they can be nested one inside the next. When we checked them in, I had them packed so they all weighed the same.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
