Patton was a harsh commander who lead though fear. There are other leaders who were good who didn't need the fear to get performance.
One thing I have to give Patton was the tactic of not letting an enemy have time to build up a defensive position. If I attack you and once you start to displace rearward never give you a chance to dig in it makes it that much easier to keep pushing you back. Patton understood that. People like to claim that Montgomery was too timid. Monty was a product of a system where failure, not of your own doing, would result in you getting sacked.
Patton disengaging from battle, moving a couple hundred miles to relieve Bastogne was one of the greatest cavalry maneuvers of all time. (Cavalry is a highly mobile, heavily armed force that can be moved rapidly around the battle field, so yes, it was a cavalry maneuver).
The fact that the cooks and bakers and whatnot plus the 101st held out was amazing.
