Have some of Ya'll heard of Bill Mauldin? He was a cartoonist with the Stars & Stripes in Italy in WWII. He was actually an infantry Sergeant, and anytime the Army needed infantry Sergeants more than cartoonists, he would have been back on the front lines.
Anyway, he loved to pick on officers and MP's in his cartoons. One of his classics was two Captains standing on a crag looking at a beautiful sunset. One of them said, "Magnificent view! Is there one for the enlisted men?"
Most officers realized his picking on officers was good for morale and forgave Mauldin for it, but Patton once said, "If that little s__of a b____ shows up in the 4th, I'll throw his a__ in jail". Later on, Mauldin had a personal meeting with Patton and if they didn't become friends they at least tolerated each other.
Mauldin would go up to the front lines to get material for his cartoons, and once was hit with shrapnel from a grenade. He was given a Purple Heart. As it happened, a soldier wrote a letter to the editor of Stars & Stripes asking, "What does Mauldin know about combat? All he does is sit safely behind the lines drawing cartoons". The editor ran the letter with an editor's note that Mauldin had been awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained from a grenade blast on such and such a date.
Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but I've always loved Mauldin's cartoons.
