My grandfather was a Sargent in the 3rd Army, 4th Armored Division, C-Company, 53rd Battalion. A Panzer Corps shelled him on Christmas Day 1944. As he layed there he saw his Battalion get gunned down by German fire, his legs were full of shrapnel. He layed there for a couple of hours and eventually dragged himself under a large pine tree, as he feared the tank that he was near would get shelled once again, and it did. He packed his wounds full of snow and layed under the tree not moving as the German Infantry was walking around him wearing American Uniforms.
Once the line was broke, he was one of the first few to be evacuated. He spent the next 6 months in a Hospital in England
He was the only surviving service member from his Battalion to come out of Bastogne.
