Of the ten years I spent in the Marine Corps, I was home for Christmas once.
Can't really remember where all I was, but I know I spent one deployed to a Nationalist Chinese Air Force Base on Taiwan. I don't remember the Christmas, but I'll never forget the New Year's Eve.
The officers and Staff NCO's from our unit were invited to a New Years Eve party at the Nationalist Chinese Air Force Officer's Club in Ping Tung. The Chinese celebrate New Years with fireworks, and there were so many fireworks going off right in the club that they had to stop the dance several times to sweep the debris from fireworks off of the dance floor.
At one point, I went a block or two down the street to reload on fireworks, and from a block away it sounded like there was a full scale firefight going on in the club.
