I think his best moment was breaking the sound barrier for the first time with the X-1 rocket dropped from a B-29 at high altitude.......seeing the video footage of the few seconds approaching and going past the barrier would have been the breaking/stopping point for many, I'm sure.
Second would be his deciding how high he could fly the F-104 Starfighter straight up before he lost consciousness, flamed out, or lost aerodynamic stability.
His biggest disappointment.....too old to be an Astronaut.....no doubt he would have been 1st on the Moon if they let him.
