It really depends on how much you want to mow and the condition of the lawn.
I currently have a JD 140D, 3 blade 48” deck. Engine ( JD / BS)and hydrostatic are good but I’ve had problems with the spindles and deck cracking. I’ve replaced and repaired spindles but I mow some ground where it really shouldn’t go. On my lawn it does ok but will sometimes leave a space between the blades, so it’s important to keep them sharp and deck level. The wider deck can scalp the ground if it uneven.

I also have an old JD LT110 with a Koehler Command and it’s still going running and I use it in the tree field. It’s a 42” deck and gets between the rows easier. It is beat but still keeps going and does a good job.

My dad has an JD 300X and it’s a smother ride, heavier machine and has had a series of more costly repairs.

My other tree neighbour has a Huskavarna 42” mower. He paid as much as my JD and it is defiantly weaker frame and deck. Engine is OK (BS) but the belts are constantly breaking and it doesn’t do as good a job at mowing ... seems to always be scalping and can’t go high enough.

The best bang for the buck was the 42” Murray mower I bought a while back. It was average quality over all but it mowed well, parts were cheaper, and it also relatively cheap to buy.

Personally I will by at Home Depot of Lowe’s or Canadian Tire what is on sale and seems the best built. I consider them a tool. I push them as far as I can but also expect they are going to be replaced in 3-5 years.
I will stick with a 42” next time. I really don’t see the advantage of professional grade unless you are mowing every day. Remember it’s a lawn mower not a brush cutter.

Now you said you didn’t wan a zero turn so I don’t want want o get into that except that if you are willing to pay more, even the cheapest one will mow faster and as well or better as the typical lawn mower.

Good luck, Grant.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
