For what it's worth, there is truth in the 1902 story. Here's a link to a Canadian Newspaper, which even includes a description of the bar--I'm assuming this is a legitimate newspaper. As a kid in WNY I would only see black squirrels on the Canadian side of the river when we went to go see Niagara Falls on a school field trip. I'm not good at reading between lines so cannot comment on whether or not all the remarks here meet forum guidelines, but the Canada story seems legitimate.
