Kerwin, a few things that may help you to understand how this works. #1 is a solenoid valve, as you said. It should pass gas through only when the ignition switch is on. This is a safety feature. Without an automatic valve of some sort, if the diaphragm in the vaporizer/regulator ruptured, all the gas in the tank could leak out thus possibly creating an explosive situation. #2 is a combination vaporizer/regulator. You will notice two water lines hooked to the vaporizer. Radiator water circulates through to heat the propane to convert it from liquid to vapor. In order for this to be accomplished satisfactorily, the cooling system thermostat must be present and working properly and the radiator must be full of coolant at all times. #3 I can't see it in the picture, but it has to be the carburetor/mixer as has been said. I can't add any more on that. #4 I have no idea on it. #5 is a filter. All I have ever seen in one of these is a cotton element made of string. I have never found any contaminants to speak of in one of these. OK. You mentioned that the engine hesitated until it warmed up a bit. This is what I think you will find is the cause of this. Inside the regulator/vaporizor is some black gooey stuff When it is cold it is stiff and it is restricting the works of the regulator. When it warms up it becomes liquid and allows the mechanism to work properly. Right under the cover of the vaporizer is a diaphragm and it is connected by way of levers to an orifice and plug valve. Think of the needle and seat in an ordinary gasoline carburetor. A repair kit for the model and brand of your vaporizer/regulator and a good cleaning will make that machine run like it is supposed to. I'd bet a cocoler on that.
