In all the years I have raised cattle I always sell the ones I’m not keeping when I wean them. Not a bunch - 100 a year or so. This fall I decided not to sell the spring calves and just background them until spring prices go up. I’ve got the extra hay this year so why not.
I have a neighbor who does a small scale feed out - 20 or so a year. He hauls them to Nebraska right to the packer and get his cash once they are graded. I’ve never feed them out other than to butcher. From far Northeast Kansas is the best route Nebraska? I have no idea how one goes about selling direct. Anyone out there do it? I kind of feel dumb after 40 years of cattle not knowing how they get to finish.
