I had a dog that loved my own cats but would kill without mercy any other creature, including stray cats, that it could get its teeth into. I had no mouse or rat problem with him around. But, sadly, he died of cancer. Within a month or so I started to notice signs of rats. Within another month or so I noticed worse signs. I think they were migrating from the huge riding stable across the road. I imagine one told another, "Hey, that killer dog across the road is gone. Let's move in!" I had a heartfelt talk with my cats abut their responsibilities. Of course, as cats are inclined to do, they ignored me. (Yes, I overfeed them.) I tried trapping the rats. I lost count at about 30 (!) that I trapped, including one that measured 17 inches from nose to tail. So I had another heartfelt talk with my cats to warn them that this would be a helluva poor time to decide to eat rats because I was going to set out poison. Which I did. Within about 10 days the rats were completely gone. They did try returning about three months later, but another dose of poison stopped the mini-invasion in less than a week. All in all, I was amazed at how quickly dozens of rats appeared, and equally amazed at how quickly the poison took them out.
