This is a double auger 2-stage thrower. From what I can tell from the parts diagram, the shaft goes right through the gearbox. The fan blades are not in the best shape but they are not what I would call badly mangled. I had wondered about a stripped key, but I will check all that out.
What I saw years ago was what you described pretty well when you say throw it like a son of a gun. I'm hoping to get it in that condition again soon.
