3 main crank didn't end with the flat head Ns either. Ford continued to use 3 mains all the way till the end of the 4 bangers in 1964. It's one of the reasons I like the 3 cylinder Fords which had 4 mains and so much heavier built. Consider a 172 ci 800 with about 50 lbs worth of crank and rods vs a 175 ci 3000 with twice the bearing surface and nearly 100 lbs worth of crank and rods.
