Difference in a trickle charger and a maintainer. A trickle charger, unless it is fully automatic, will over charge if left on too long. A maintainer is only intended for keeping a fully charged battery fully charged under normal storage conditions.
But if they are discharging under normal use, something is wrong. Either there is a problem with the charging system, there is an external drain, or a bad battery.
If one battery is bad, it will drain both.
Unless this is something that sits for months at a time, trying to recharge them is just a temporary fix. And if one is bad, always replace them as a pair. Then save the good one to use on something else with a single battery.
