It sounds like you have the cylinder barrels threaded on the inside.The new rubber/plastic packings hold up much better on installation than the old leather types.What I was shown to do,in the mid 70's was to spread bondo on the threads,thinly,and when it dries sand it down to the level of the threads.Then Slide the rod in,with the new packings on it.Run a propane torch around the outside of the barrel while running a pick around the threads.That fudge will peel out of there pretty slick.Just have the butt end of the barrel elevated a little bit so the bondo will tend to fall outward while you peel it.Way easier to do than it sounds.
