Oldtanker, I think the phrase "he died doing what he loved" refers more to the activity, rather than dying from it. I don't think anyone likes having their activity go sideways. There is some value in taking stock of the risk, and if its dangerous, quit after cheating death the first time. Never makes much sense to keep doing a dangerous thing until it finally doesn't work- not very good odds.

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion.
