Working on our Ford TW-10, 2WD. The front spindles, where they attach to the steering arms, use a 42 tooth tapered spline. Ours has worn down so that the arm is below to top of the splines. We were able to use some washers and get it tight and it held for 5 years, but it is loose again. The steering arm does not have any more room to move down the taper as it is too close to the knee. New replacement steering arms are available through A&I for $365. But I don't know how much wear is in the spindle. New spindles are available for $770!!!!!!! New arms are a possibility, but new spindles... might have to wait.
Any ideas for repair?
I just recently used Devcon Titanium Putty to repair a straight shaft with spline but I haven't tested it yet. Tempted to putty it up, install, wait 48 hrs, then torque down arm and see how it does. Another risky Idea would be to build up one side of the arm, split the arm, and drill it for a clamp. Risky in that welding that much on cast iron could cause it to crack. Although thinking of it, it is pretty much scrap now anyways.
I have heard, and even done on an old JD that used a 7 spline taper, of using steel shim stock in the taper. Problem is this 42 spline taper can't really take strips of shims line the 7 spline did.
