Must have changed some since i retired , I sure hauled a bunch of Mil . freight during the second trip to the sand box . It is pretty bad when you are on a first name basis with the transportation section of a Mil. base and you have the company commanders HOME phone Number . I guess lending a hand for the better part of the day unloading heavy equipment made lots of Brownie points . I had been there three times before and was starting to get a handle on how things worked , I was first truck in for the day and i had a D 7 F cat on . I reported in and was told to go down to the one far off loading area , Ok . I get down there and start to get the chains off and some civilian worker comes up to me and says ah we don't have anyone here to unload and the reserve unit will not be here till WEDNESDAY > WHOA hold on here i am not setting up a pup tent and camping out here and now that i am thru the gate my permit is done for . This tonka toy is coming OFF NOW . Well well But ah nobody here knows how to operate them. > well I DO and i was the one that put this Cat up on this trailer Friday . OH you know how how to operate it Ah yup so stand back and let me do my job. Finished breaking down up on the cat had to USE MY KEY and fired her up and allowed her to warm a bit kicked the brakes off Opened the throttle stomped down on the Whoa pedal kicked her in Rev. and off the trailer she came . Once on the ground i asked him just where would he like it parked and i had to follow him out across several fields to where this piece was to be placed along with that unit's other stuff went back to the truck and had just got everything gathered up and all hooked back together and making funny lines in the comic book when another driver pulls in with a 9 axle and a 890 Deere excavator and i see the civilian talking to the driver and lots of arms and hands flapping and here come BOB and he say by chance do you know how to operate that excavator and do you happen to have a key . God how do some of these socalled heavy haul drivers even walk . I told BOB yes i can and yes i have a KEY . So i walked over to this guy pulling a 9 axle and said can you detatch by your self or should i hold your hand Got it off the trailer and walked to it's spot Got back to the truck and was just pulling out and headed for the gate when the head Warrant Officer chased me down and asked if i could stay for a little longer as more stuff was coming in and if i could TEACH a couple guys how to on some of this stuff . Hey they bought lunch . 3:30 was the end of the day and i was just crawling into the corn binder when Mr. Parker say where ya headed for Now and i said probably to a truck stop and start looking for a load some place . He said your from Ohio wright , yep well we will solve the load thing wright now just back up to that dock and i am going to put a load going up to Loardstown you know where that is at , Yep about 20 miles from my house , ok when ya get that off you are to load another D 7 F and bring it back . when do you think you will be back down here and i said i'll see you Thursday morning . God i loved them loads that were 8 foot 7 or 8 inches wide due to tire bulge load that sucker put the air to the tries run till the sun goes down pull in someplace for supper come out strip off all the fancy stuff and set sail . even hauled out of several places i was stationed at when i was in . The only small problem i had was the fact that we carried two cameras , one was for accidents and one for Cargo claims , i would have to take them out of the truck before they could x ray the rig .
