How do you determine which people "have more knowledge about the situation" and which ones are just repeating the hype?
As a source of information of value, I rate the internet well below most other sources.
Something I have learned in my time on this earth is that ALL sources of news are biased. Whether it is one of the news reporting agencies, a politician, a newspaper, or any other source you can think of. They all have their biases.
Somebody returning from an affected area may have more information than you and I, but they did not necessarily observe the ENTIRE situation - only their little corner of it. That does not make their account of it the gospel truth.
Bear in mind that the folks up there on the TV, radio, Internet, and newspapers are not all knowing. Each has an agenda, and each will usually err on the side of caution. If one plays it down and it becomes major, he is in trouble. ?If one says it is major and it turns out not to be, the public just gives a sigh of relief and life goes on.
