You want 12 NOT 24 Volts, so connect the two batteries in PARALLEL... + of one to + of other,,,,,,,,,,,- of one to - of other.
The two twelves in parallel still gives you 12 volts BUT THE AVAILABLE AMPS INTO YOUR STARTER CAN DOUBLE for improved cranking capacity. Example if each battery was say 500 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), two connected in parallel yields 1000 CCA. Anytime multiple batteries are used its best if they are a matched set of identical spec batteries, even the same age is good.
