In answer to your first question. Depends on the application. One would think that heat dissipation would be better on single belts as slight gap between belts would allow air flow around belts helping to cool, however on some drives such as high shock loads/high starting loads the banded belts distribute H.P. requirements between all belts tending to reduce slippage and possibility of belts rolling over or even off which answers the second part of your question. There is a lot to learn on drive selection. Is this a new drive you are engineering or just wondering what to replace on an existing drive? If you let us know what you are doing I might be able to help you out? This machine center in this video clip has 4 200 H.P. drives and 2 150 H.P. drives using both banded and single v belt drives for specific reasons.
