George, I suspect Valvoline discontinued their conventional LSD lube because synthetic gear oil is mo' betta. And since all the OEMs recommend the synthetic stuff, nobody buys the conventional LSD lube anymore. Well, almost nobody...
You could have used the oil you got, you just needed to add the friction modifier, which costs less than ten bucks. (Coincidentally about the same as the cost differential between three quarts of conventional gear oil and three quarts of synthetic.) I like Hobo's idea, which is to use the synthetic gear oil PLUS the friction modifier. But I was always a belt 'n' suspenders kind of guy.
