Best bet is to remove your generator, buy a VR and send both to a car electric shop that specializes in old cars, tractors. They will adjust your reg to the output of the gen, and make sure it's polarized."

"Delco 10DN " = a series of ALTERNATOR.
Commonly used mechanical voltage regulators can't get "recharged" to a different polarity.
However, generators may need to be "polarized", otherwise known as "flashed" (under certain circumstances).
Traditionally, mechanical VR polarity was determined by the specific type of metal used for each half of a pair of contacts.
That is reversed between regulators intended for (+) ground use and regulators intended for (-) ground use.
Longest contact point life and therefore VR life requires the regulator to be used with it's designed polarity.
All that being said, it seems many regulators being made and sold today are not rated for one polarity or the other, and the contacts aren't made from long-lasting QUALITY $$$ materials like they used to be.
Upside is that they can be used on either polarity (unless otherwise labelled).
Downside it that life expectancy is nowhere near that of the good old OEM units.
The info below is from Delco voltage regulator manual, likely, the basic contact material information applies to any QUALITY VR.
