Here in Cayuga county, local property tax[to support towns and county] comes early in the year. School tax[based on property] comes later in the summer. The state has capped taxes on farmland, otherwise we'd be out of business. Plus, school tax on farmland, up to 350 acres, is refundable when you do state income tax. So, as a small crop farmer, I can't really complain. Homeowners, on the other hand, get hit hard.
We haven't begun to feel the pain this overall shut down will yield, as sales taxes support a large part of the local [town and county] governments, and sales tax revenues are way down. Cayuga county is going to furlough 11% of its employees. Our county highway dep't is already a skeleton crew as retirees are being paid, and there's no money to hire replacements.
